The King and Jake

Posted: May 9, 2009 in Scouts

Turns out that His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is not only a yachting enthusiast, but he’s also the Honorary Chairman of the World Scout Foundation – the worldwide fellowship and fund raising arm of the World Organization of the Scout Movement.

So, when the Volvo Ocean Race came to the port of Boston just as the 100th anniversary of Scouting in the USA approaches, it was an obvious chance to tie some things together.  300 Scouts and Scouters from the Boston area were invited to represent the Boy Scouts of America at a pancake breakfast with Baden-Powell Fellows from around the world. Jacob and John were honored to be among them.

16 Scouts from the local Troop assembled early on a Saturday morning for the trip into Boston.

Not only did we get to have breakfast with His Majesty and some of the world’s largest contributors to Scouting, but we also got to enjoy a Q&A with some of the crew members and see the boats sail off from the dock for a day of in-harbor racing.

Among the dignitaries present was Crown Prince Faisal bin Abdullah bin Mohammed of Saudi Arabia who a was on hand to present the World Scouting Foundation with a check for $3 million!!  Clearly, this is a rich man’s sport.

It was all a very cool experience!
